Position paper on European policy updated

scienceindustries has adapted its 2009 position paper on "Challenges facing Switzerland's European policy" to take account of new developments in the relationship between Switzerland and the EU. In this paper, scienceindustries continues to argue for a pragmatic European policy with regard to bilateral co-operation and against any institutional integration for Switzerland (e.g. entry to the EEA or EU). You can examine the position paper on the EU integration policy here (text in German only).

scienceindustries achieves most of its negotiating targets in the free trade agreement with China

scienceindustries particularly welcomes the signing of the free trade agreement between Switzerland and China. scienceindustries' negotiating targets were all achieved, with the exception of the scope and duration of the tariff reduction. In particular, agreement was achieved on up-to-date Rules of Origin and on intellectual property protection going beyond the level set by TRIPS. Overall, scienceindustries regards the free trade agreement with China as an important step, both economically and symbolically, in strengthening Switzerland's competitiveness within the Chinese market in comparison with its counterparts from the USA and the EU (neither of whom have a comparable agreement).

Bee health: successful lobbying by scienceindustries

The health of bees is currently a matter of public interest, focussing on a discussion of the potential side effects of pesticides. In April 2013, the European Union and the Swiss Federal Office for Agriculture announced the suspension of approval for three active ingredients in the neonicotinoid class. In this context, scienceindustries has campaigned within a media discussion and as part of the Parliamentary process for a risk-based, objective discussion of these topics. scienceindustries has successfully worked in Parliament towards a holistic approach to the health of bees, employing sustainable measures. By voting No to an extension of the suspension, the National Council has reached a prudent decision. A prohibition on further agents would have caused great damage to agricultural production, without any resultant reduction in bee deaths.

Swiss Pharma Code consultation procedure on the basis of the EPFIA Disclosure Code

The General Assembly of the European association for the pharmaceutical industry has adopted the "EFPIA Code on Disclosure of Transfers of Value from Pharmaceutical Companies to Healthcare Professionals and Healthcare Organisations". The aim of this code is to compel the pharmaceutical companies to disclose all their payment transactions ("transfers of value"), particularly those made to medical practitioners and hospitals. This duty of publication is due to take effect from 2016 and will include payments made in 2015. The intention is that the EFPIA Disclosure Code should be put into practice by the national associations: scienceindustries has drawn up a suitable draft Swiss Code and is currently consulting upon it with the relevant companies. The scienceindustries Board will be required to adopt the revised Swiss Pharma Transparency Code at its autumn meeting.

Swiss Parliamentary Group set up for Education, Research and Innovation

Under the presidency of National Council Member Gerhard Pfister, scienceindustries has set up the Parliamentary Group for Education, Research and Innovation PGERI. The aim of this group is to improve Parliamentarians' understanding of the areas of Education, Research and Innovation, which are crucial to our industry. This new platform, with over 70 members from all political parties and both Councils, met for the first time in the spring session of 2013 for discussions with Dr. Thomas Beck, Head of Research Center Nestlé SA on the subject of "Our research creates innovation". The next meeting will take place in the autumn session, on the subject of "Best Talents: for a competitive Switzerland".

      Re-orientation of the "Nutrition" specialism

The Board has approved the strategic re-orientation of the "Nutrition" specialism. This will take account of inputs from important external partners (including the Federal Office of Public Health, Federal Office for Agriculture and NTN Swiss Food Research) as well as the affected member companies. scienceindustries will therefore concentrate in future on the subjects of resource efficiency, sustainable agriculture and food production; nutrients and supplements, food technology and the social dimensions of new trends. In the first instance, it will concentrate on promoting the acceptance of new and existing technologies and products, and on a more forceful discussion of the benefits.

SimplyScience now available in French-speaking Switzerland, and a "Best of Swiss Web" Bronze award winner

SimplyScience.ch has been available online in the French language since 20th April 2013. The SimplyScience.ch team for French-speaking Switzerland works closely with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne. The French-language website went live at the "Festival de Robotique" event, where SimplyScience also introduced the SimplyNano case, supported by Novartis. On 21st March 2013, SimplyScience won the bronze medal in the Public Affairs category of Swiss Web Awards 2013 in recognition of its work (a total of 465 websites had been entered for this award). The jurors were impressed by the fresh appearance of the new website, combined with its high-quality content.

SimplyScience and its successful "Science on the Move" competition

This Roche-sponsored competition for school classes has now been held for a second time. With 56 participating classes and approximately 1000 students, "Science on the Move 2013" was 75% larger than the first event. The Final took place in Basel on 21st June 2013, where the victorious class came from the Cantonal school in Trogen (Canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden), winning a Science Week in San Francisco (USA).

Dr. Thomas Beck, Dr. Emanuele Centonze and Prof. Dr. Christophe Copéret now on the scienceindustries Board

On 28th June 2013, the General Assembly of scienceindustries unanimously voted for Dr. Thomas Beck, Head of Research Center Nestlé SA, Dr. Emanuele Centonze, ECSA SA, and Prof. Dr. Christophe Copéret, ETH Zurich to join the Board of scienceindustries to replace retiring Members Prof. Dr. Werner Bauer, Dr. Hanns-Eberhard Erle, Dr. Silvio Inderbitzin, Prof. Dr. Jay Siegel and Willi Zimmerli.
