«Our commitment to the future of our industries – and society»

How do scienceindustries and its member companies engage with young talent? You may be aware of our many years of commitment to “Schweizer Jugend forscht” (Swiss Youth in Science), the National Future Career Day or our role as a supporter of the 2023 International Chemistry Olympiad. Then there is SimplyScience: for almost 15 years, our own initiative to promote young talent has been advancing young people’s understanding of science and technology, inspiring them to study STEM subjects and introducing them to training and career opportunities in the fields of science and business.

It is of great importance to society that young people have a solid basic understanding of scientific interrelationships. With SimplyScience, we commit ourselves to ensuring that children and young people have motivating experiences with science and technology. To make this possible, the foundation, whose board of directors includes Board members of scienceindustries, works with numerous partners from the fields of science, public administration and civil society. In addition to the website SimplyScience.ch (available in the three Swiss national languages) with experiments, quizzes, articles or learning media for the classroom, the programme also includes presence at events, cooperation with schools and teachers, and competitions for school classes.

This special summer newsletter reports on these activities. Let yourself, your own or other children be inspired – we wish you a great summer!

Best regards
Stephan Mumenthaler, Director of scienceindustries

«Mission Solar System» competition

«Mission Solar System» is already the fourth big SimplyScience competition specifically targeting primary school classes – and for the first time in three languages, German, French and Italian. From Monday, 15 August to Sunday, 4 December, the SimplyScience Foundation, in partnership with the Science Lab of the University of Zurich, is inviting students to explore the topic of the solar system.

Chemistry for You and Me

The learning medium «Chemie für dich und mich» takes fifth- to sixth-grade students on a journey into the world of everyday chemistry. Chemical phenomena are consciously experienced and observed through experiments linked to the everyday experiences of children. Specialist, didactic and creative materials provide an exciting insight into the field of chemistry, which does not require any chemical formulas at this stage.

Science on the Move – teamwork pays off!

The «Science on the Move» class competition will take place for the seventh time in 2023. High school classes from all over Switzerland can put their creativity, scientific approach and teamwork to the test. Thanks to generous support from Roche, the ten best-placed classes will win attractive prizes – the main prize is a week-long school trip abroad where young people can immerse themselves in the fascinating world of science and research.

Swiss Youth in Science: internship at member companies as a prize

Every year, two special prizes from the SimplyScience Foundation are awarded at the Swiss Youth in Science national competition. Each includes a cash prize and a short internship at a scienceindustries member company. Last year’s award winners, Vanessa Küng and Julia Bassili, were invited to an internship lasting several days at the Syngenta Research Centre in Stein. Their reports show how valuable the insights into the company and conversations with employees and researchers were for the two students with regard to their own career paths.

SimplyNano 2: the experiment kit for nanotechnology

Following on the popular SimplyNano 1 experiment kit, SimplyNano 2 contains many new experiments in nanobionics (imitation of nature for technical purposes) , nano products and nano materials that can be integrated into the curriculum of secondary levels 1 and 2. The SimplyNano project won the Building Award in 2021 in the category «Promoting young talent in the field of technology», and the kits are already being used at all schools in the cantons of Aargau, St. Gallen, Appenzell Innerrhoden and Appenzell Ausserrhoden, and from autumn 2022 also in the canton of Zurich.

Experiments and discovery at the «tun» shows

Every year, the «tun» experience show enables children aged 6 to 13 to experience the world of technology and natural sciences at two to three locations in Switzerland. At the same time, it provides a platform for local companies and institutions active throughout Switzerland such as the SimplyScience Foundation to kindle interest in these subjects through information stands and experiments. After the «tun» experience shows had to be cancelled for two years due to the pandemic, SimplyScience was present at tunOstschweiz and tunBasel in 2022 and will again be making cooling pads with the children and presenting mirror drawing duels at tunSolothurn in November.
